Netball Waitākere is proud to announce the appointment of Linda Vagana MNZM as its new Patron, recognising her outstanding contribution to netball, community development, and leadership both within Aotearoa New Zealand and across the Pacific.
A proud West Aucklander whose netball journey began in the west, Linda Vagana is one of New Zealand netball's most respected figures. As a former Silver Fern, she represented New Zealand from 1993 to 2002, earning 64 Test caps as a formidable goal keep and goal defense. Renowned for her athleticism, exceptional intercepting ability, and leadership, she played a key role in New Zealand's silver medal-winning campaigns at the 1998 and 2002 Commonwealth Games and the 1999 Netball World Cup.
Following her distinguished Silver Ferns career, Vagana continued to make an impact on the international stage by representing and captaining Samoa at the 2003 Netball World Cup. She later served as Samoa's national coach, contributing significantly to the growth and development of netball throughout the Pacific region.
In recognition of her services to netball, Linda was appointed a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in 2003. Beyond sport, she has built an equally impressive legacy in community development and education, serving as General Manager of the Duffy Books in Homes programme, where she has championed literacy and learning opportunities for thousands of young New Zealanders.
Netball Waitākere Board Chair Danica Hape said Linda's appointment reflects the organisation's commitment to honouring its history while inspiring future generations.
"Linda represents the heart of netball, West Auckland, rangatahi & our Pasiifika community. She is an outstanding athlete, an inspiring, humble & respected leader our people look up to and someone who has dedicated her life to making a positive difference for others. We are delighted & privlidged that she has accepted the role of Patron and look forward to the inspiration, guidance, and mana she will bring to Netball Waitākere."
As Patron, Vagana will serve as a respected ambassador for Netball Waitākere, helping to elevate the organisation's profile, strengthen stakeholder confidence, and advocate for the continued growth and success of netball in West Auckland and beyond.
The role of Patron is honorary and non-executive, providing opportunities to support strategic advocacy, mentorship, relationship-building, and fundraising initiatives. Patrons are selected because their values, reputation, and commitment align closely with an organisation's purpose and vision.
Linda Vagana said “I’m honestly really humbled. My netball journey truly grew through Netball Waitakere’s beautiful whanau community of players, coaches and volunteers who just gave us an opportunity and supported us wholly. Netball Waitakere has such a strong community hub uplifting whanau through netball, and hopefully we can keep building this together.”
Netball Waitākere General Manager, Murray Gardiner said the appointment is a significant milestone for the organisation.
"Linda's reputation, experience, and passion for community make her an exceptional advocate for our sport. Her connection to West Auckland, coupled with her influence across netball, education, and community development, will be invaluable as we continue to grow and strengthen opportunities for our members."
Widely regarded as one of New Zealand netball's most influential defenders and role models, Linda Vagana's legacy extends far beyond her playing career through her ongoing commitment to sport, education, and Pacific communities. Her appointment as Patron marks an exciting new chapter for Netball Waitākere as it continues to serve and inspire generations of netballers across the region.
